Indigenous Careers Across Ontario
Ontario is home to 133 First Nations communities and the largest Indigenous population of any Canadian province, with nearly 375,000 people identifying as First Nations, Metis, or Inuit. The province's economy is the largest in Canada, and Indigenous peoples contribute to and benefit from its strength across sectors including mining, forestry, healthcare, education, government, technology, and construction. Whether you are seeking a role in a northern community like Timmins, Kenora, or Thunder Bay, or in southern urban centres like Ottawa, Hamilton, or London, Ontario offers a wide spectrum of Indigenous employment opportunities.
Provincial Programs Supporting Indigenous Employment
The Ontario government funds several programs to improve Indigenous employment outcomes. The Indigenous Economic Development Fund supports Indigenous businesses that create jobs in their communities. The Ontario Public Service has an Indigenous Internship Program that provides entry-level government experience for Indigenous youth. Additionally, Treaty organizations such as the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians, and the Grand Council Treaty #3 employ hundreds of people in roles spanning health services, education, justice, and lands and resources management. Many Ontario municipalities have also adopted Indigenous employment strategies to increase representation in their workforces.
Industries With Strong Indigenous Hiring in Ontario
Ontario's mining sector, particularly in the Ring of Fire region, continues to generate employment opportunities for Indigenous peoples through impact benefit agreements and partnership models. The healthcare sector is another major employer, with Indigenous health access centres operating across the province. Post-secondary institutions increasingly hire Indigenous faculty, advisors, and support staff. Construction trades offer excellent earning potential, and many unions and training centres actively recruit Indigenous apprentices.
