Finding Aboriginal Employment Opportunities in Canada

While the term "Aboriginal" has largely been replaced by "Indigenous" in official Canadian usage since the 2016 adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, many job seekers still search for "Aboriginal jobs" when looking for employment opportunities. The Canadian Constitution Act of 1982 recognizes three groups of Aboriginal peoples: First Nations (Status and Non-Status Indians), Metis, and Inuit. All three groups continue to face systemic barriers in employment, including lower labour force participation rates, higher unemployment, and limited access to training and education opportunities, particularly in remote and northern communities.

Federal Programs Supporting Aboriginal Employment

The federal government has established several programs to address employment gaps. The Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) Program, which replaced the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy in 2019, invests over $408 million annually in Indigenous-controlled service delivery organizations that provide job training, skills development, and employment supports. The Federal Contractors Program requires companies with government contracts over $1 million to commit to employment equity, including the representation of Aboriginal peoples. The public service itself applies preference for qualified Indigenous candidates in many hiring processes through special staffing measures.

Changing Terminology, Consistent Commitment

Whether you search for Aboriginal jobs, Indigenous jobs, or First Nations careers, our platform aggregates the same comprehensive set of employment opportunities. We work with employers who use both legacy and current terminology in their postings. What matters most is that these positions represent genuine opportunities for Indigenous peoples to build meaningful careers with organizations that respect their rights, cultures, and contributions. Our listings span every sector and region of Canada, from entry-level positions to senior executive roles. Use our search filters to narrow by location, industry, salary range, and work arrangement to find the opportunities that best match your experience and aspirations.
