Job Description
Volunteer Board Director
An invitation to First Nations, Métis and Inuit people
Moms Against Racism (MAR) Canada | National | Remote
Moms Against Racism Canada is actively inviting First Nations, Métis and Inuit people who feel aligned with our work to consider joining us in shaping MAR's next chapter as a Director on our 2027 Board.
We have up to four Board positions available for 2027 and are hoping to welcome and build relationships with First Nations, Métis and Inuit people who may want to learn, lead and do this work alongside us, bringing their own knowledge, experiences and ways of being as we collectively shape MAR’s future.
Why We're Making This Invitation
MAR's work takes place on Indigenous lands, and we embrace our responsibility to be good community members and to build relationships with Indigenous peoples grounded in respect, reciprocity and accountability. We believe our governance is strengthened by Indigenous voices, knowledge, lived experience and ways of being, and right now, those voices are underrepresented on our Board. We want to change that.
What Board Service Looks Like
MAR Directors help guide the organization, make important decisions and keep MAR accountable to our mission and communities. You don't need years of Board experience or a long list of credentials. We value professional expertise alongside lived experience, cultural and community knowledge, caregiving, advocacy, navigating systems, relationship-building and other ways of knowing and being.
The Commitment
Term: Three years, with the possibility of reappointment
Board meetings: Approximately 1.5 hours monthly
Committee and governance work: Approximately 3–4 additional hours per month, depending on role and organizational needs
Participation: Directors prepare for meetings, participate in at least one Board committee or priority governance project, and engage in ongoing learning and reflection
A Reciprocal Commitment
As a MAR Director, you'll be invited to bring your ideas, questions, relationships, skills, lived experience and capacity into our shared work. In return, we hope MAR can be a place of meaningful connection, learning and shared purpose, where we grow in relationship with one another while contributing to work that builds a better future for our kids.
If this feels like a community and governance space you may want to be part of, we'd love to meet you.
Nominations close: November 1st, 2026

Requirements
Skills, Experience & Commitments
We're looking for people who are ready to contribute thoughtfully and actively to MAR's leadership and long-term direction. Previous Board experience is an asset but not required.
We value people who bring:
Leadership and organizational skills, developed through community work, caregiving, employment, volunteering or managing projects and initiatives.
Strategic thinking and sound judgment, including the ability to see the bigger picture, ask thoughtful questions and make decisions with others.
Experience or strengths in fundraising, governance, policy, project management or organizational leadership.
A commitment to healing, mental health and well-being, including culturally grounded, trauma-informed and community-centred approaches.
A willingness to learn, reflect and practice accountability, including engaging with different perspectives and navigating challenging conversations.
Capacity to participate meaningfully, prepare for meetings, follow through on commitments and share responsibility for MAR's governance.
We recognize that valuable leadership experience doesn't always come with a title, credential or formal role. If you've organized community initiatives, advocated for families, led projects or helped people work together toward change, you may already bring many of the skills we're looking for.
